A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
