Bluefin Fish Sells for Unprecedented Bid of $3.2 million at Tokyo New Year Sale
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which manages locations across the country and overseas.
"The year's tuna signals fortune," remarked the business owner, a regular figure at the traditional first sale.
Known as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This new acquisition exceeds his previous record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to surpass his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one elated customer.
