Bullish Nancy insists he is not worried about dismissal yet Celtic fans unleash wrath following derby defeat.
The under-pressure manager declared he was not afraid of the sack, claiming, “We are extremely close to things turning around,” despite edging perilously close to the chopping block with a convincing setback against Rangers.
A Second-Half Meltdown Sees Derby Defeat
Celtic had led their oldest rivals at the interval but a second-half capitulation enabled Rangers to draw level on points with the current league title holders. Nancy, who was appointed from Columbus Crew, has now presided over six defeats in eight matches.
“There is unity at the club,” insisted Nancy.
Questioned about the speculation, the 48-year-old said: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on working out methods to help my team to be good on details.
Supporters' Anger On Display
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – directed at the dugout and directors – by protesting outside the stadium. The hierarchy are thought to be considering to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful caretaker period before Nancy was hired, if Nancy departs.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. Yet in stating that’s how it is, it doesn’t mean that I am a defeatist guy. No. The message is the turnaround is near, extremely close to change the narrative.”
Focus on the Details
The coach highlights the fact Celtic can perform strongly for one half at a time. In fact, were it not for wastefulness in front of goal they might have been greater than 1-0 up. “There were positives aside from the fact that we haven’t scored our chances,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but it's important to stay balanced.
“The level we had at certain moments was really, really, really high. This is the reality. I wouldn't speak so positively if it was not the case. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I noted we've seen this before. That’s why I feel we are nearly there to a shift in fortunes. Right now: small things.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. The issue now comes down to consistency. My message would be different if it was not the case. This is why I firmly believe we’re going to be able to turn things around.”
The Rangers Boss Response
The victorious boss was cautious about a title charge even after what felt like a huge result. “We take it game by game, so we can develop momentum,” he said. “The belief in the team is excellent.”
