Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

These conditions come after recent fires in another state, which resulted in the loss of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been activated for later this week in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Trigger Chaos

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into darkness recently after powerful winds damaged the urban power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is expected to create further issues as service providers work urgently to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Blankets Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A specific type of fog, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended fog has been driven by exceptional fall rainfall that resulted in soils waterlogged.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a weather system has brought heavy rain, powerful gales and even snowfall to a set of islands – weather many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unheard of at higher ground, the system delivered some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snow, strong winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph observed on multiple locations. The influence of the storm is forecast to diminish this week with more typical weather taking hold.
