Chainsaw Man Dominates the U.S. Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend
Did Sony repeated their success? Following the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million threshold worldwide, attaining a global total of $108 million this weekend. This feature beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Notable American and International Earnings
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed $18.2M domestically after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday box office and $4.5 million Sunday. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced feature earned $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M via Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2M in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.
Parallels to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies
Anime marketing agency an industry expert previously spoke, comparing the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in the year 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical eighteen million dollars domestically. This movie's opening frame is in line with that marker, while its $108 million worldwide total is now positioned a bit short of that movie's over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will achieve the earnings seen by mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for the distributor.
Fan Engagement Efforts Boost Success
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to boost their dominance at the cinema for anime films. The Reze Arc marketing campaign began at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at the New York Comic Con featuring never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for the public and influencers alike after the concluding day of the gathering.
What’s Next
This year marks a major time for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional anime film premiering in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
