Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
