Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The former official announced he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel released his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate tracking their progress".

Summers, who once presided over the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted the economist's choice to step down.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," the company remarked.

Legislative Background

This announcement arrives after both chambers of the US legislature voted on recently to endorse a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Epstein.

The bill will then proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to endorse the measure, after reversing his position on the subject following pushback from his supporters.

Message Details

A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The messages indicated that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce the official to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the public, the former official said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was ceased to be connected with the group.

Summers entered the board of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
