Manchester Synagogue Attack: A Casualty Appears to Have Been Fired Upon by Officers
During a devastating development, one of the individuals lost during the Manchester synagogue assault appears to have been shot dead by law enforcement personnel.
Police Announcement Reveals Firearm Injury
The chief constable from the local force announced that the Home Office pathologist has provisionally determined the victim died of a gunshot wound.
“We sought guidance overnight from the Home Office pathologist ahead of detailed autopsies scheduled for later today. The Home Office pathologist has advised that he has provisionally determined a victim would appear to have suffered a injury consistent with a gunshot injury.”
Suspect Details
The assailant, Jihad al-Shamie, was not carrying a gun, and all discharged rounds came from authorized firearms personnel at the scene.
Authorities think the deceased was among those positioned at the entrance trying to stop the attacker from entering the building.
Consequences of Police Action
“It follows therefore pending additional analysis, the wound may sadly have been sustained as a unintended and heartbreaking result of the necessary rapid response taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end.”
Victims Identified
The two victims who lost their lives at Heaton Park synagogue located in Manchester earlier this week were identified as Adrian Daulby, aged 53 and Melvin Cravitz, 66 years old.
These individuals lost their lives when a vehicle was employed to ram into the property of the local Jewish place of worship, before the attacker targeted attendees in a six-minute rampage that concluded after police with firearms shot at him twice, ending his life at the door of the temple.
Further Harm
Three others sustained major injuries in the attack on Yom Kippur, the most sacred occasion in the Jewish year.
The chief constable added, “Medical professionals have informed us that another injured person now hospitalized sustained a gunshot wound, which is fortunately non-fatal. It is believed both victims were near each other behind the synagogue door, as attendees showed courage to stop the assailant from gaining entry.”
Ongoing Assistance
“We extend our condolences are directed toward the affected relatives, and the wider community, impacted by this incident in the region and elsewhere. Trained personnel are providing support and assistance for everyone involved, including the courageous emergency teams.”
Attacker Profile
Authorities identified the perpetrator as Shamie, thirty-five, a British citizen of Syrian descent.
Greater Manchester police reported that three additional individuals – two male suspects and an older female – had been detained “for alleged involvement in planning of acts of terrorism”.
