Meteorologists have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People should to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
