The offspring of former South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked accusations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over remarks she made on online platforms several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her father.

A seven-day period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been accused of encouraging this unrest and confronts allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

History of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the previous president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has repeatedly rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier calling the state's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her dad after he started his own political organization and ran against the African National Congress.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related persecution" against the former president and his family.

A handful of followers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the evidence presented by the state is inadequate and does not have compelling proof for a conviction.
