Slot Provides Zero Justifications and Pledges to Plot Route Out of Slump
Liverpool's head coach stated he needed to “look at myself” after Liverpool suffered a 6th loss in seven Premier League matches at home against Forest and affirmed he would find a way out of the title holders' slump.
Forest, in the relegation zone before kick off, produced the biggest victory at Anfield in their history as the Merseyside club fell to an 8th loss in 11 matches in all competitions. The British record signing, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and Liverpool argued the defender's first goal ought to have been ruled out for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s chalked-off goal against City before the national team pause. But Slot conceded the responsibility rested with him and made no excuses.
“No one wishes to hear me now talking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 at home to Forest,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I should look at my own role first and my team, but it demonstrates you how a score can alter the flow of a match. Before I was just waiting for us to score a strike. Afterwards we barely generated anything.
“Naturally there is a path forward, especially with the talented footballers we have. Regardless if you win or lose when you look back you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, where can we make changes?’ but that is different from doubting your abilities.
“I wish to stress I am accountable for the present losses. You are responsible when you are winning but also responsible when you are defeated. I can never provide sufficient reasons for us to have the outcomes we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”
The team's performance fell apart as the coach made several attacking changes when pursuing the match. “It was the same on the road at Forest last season,” he said. “I took Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] out and brought on the Portuguese forward and he scored immediately to equalize at 1-1. At that time it was courageous, now it’s probably unwise.”
The Anfield side last lost two successive at Anfield league fixtures by Nottingham Forest in 1963. The most recent occasion they suffered back-to-back top-flight games by a three-goal margin was in the mid-60s.
The manager commented: “It was extremely poor. Competing at home, conceding 3-0 regardless of which team you encounter is a terrible result. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the game. I did not witness us creating so many chances in the opening half-hour perhaps the entire season, and the first time they entered in our box they scored.
“It wasn’t at City, but in all other game we have been the dominant side and were capable to create opportunities. Lately it is almost consistently that we fail to convert our chances and the attempts we concede go in.”
