Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
