Much like Storm Claudia tore through the northwest the prior day, City swept United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This scoreline represented successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to juggle league and European football with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared weary from start to finish, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a several changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.
