During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how the character Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
