Three Lions Coach Explains The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His journey from player to coach commenced through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs took him to top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both test boundaries. Their methods feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and avoids language including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts for managers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those impressed and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club was Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
