This statement referred to recent musings about supplying advanced missiles to Ukraine.

An ex- US state department official, a foreign policy expert, observed, "The Russian leader is attempting to disrupt the progress toward greater pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see tomorrow, but the likelihood of moving toward a truce by pushing Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have diminished."

This development came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Russian government characterized as "extremely open and trustful."

European Energy Restrictions and Market Impact

The European Union have set a requirement for fuel importers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian oil, as stated in a official guideline released on recently. This step is part of the EU's upcoming prohibition on purchases of fuels made from Russian crude, which forms part of its 18th restrictive measures against Russia over its military actions in the region.

Market analysts noted that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the potential reduction of India's imports of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with projections of a phased reduction, according to insiders familiar with the matter.

"This represents a positive development for the oil market as it would eliminate a big buyer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, adding that crude values were steady on Thursday.

Security Developments and Energy Strikes

A large-scale Moscow's drone and missile attack hit energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, causing outages in eight regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces deployed hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks affected the regions of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, Sumy and western Ukraine.

International Political Responses

Ukraine's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow demonstrated its true approach to negotiations through the "terror" of these attacks. "The Russian government yet again chose weapons over talks, making this assault into a direct setback to current peace efforts," she said.

Kallas announced a "roadmap" to prepare for potential conflict by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be completely functional by the 2027 deadline.

This initiative, called the "European drone defence initiative," is projected to start operations initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. EU authorities aims to secure the support of member state representatives at a meeting in the coming days.
