Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Victory

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration

Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly focused on promises to address increasing crime and significantly restrict immigration.

He consistently cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.

His policy ideas featured U.S.-style measures such as building detention centers, high walls, security fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.

Yet, other analysts further frame it as a extension of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Clear Majority

Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast will not hold an overall majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This legislative landscape might challenge his policy goals, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.

"There are several things about how a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will implement them," commented a political professor.

The professor stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However where there is considerably less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his central theme across the race."
