Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
