Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
